Secret Santa Gives A Coffee Mug

Add to Technorati Favorites
Several employees here at WKBT participated in the Secret Santa Give Away this year.  Don’t know about Secret Santa?  Well, it is a deal where a bunch of people get together and place their name, interests, hobbies, and favorite color on a piece of paper.  Somehow these are redistributed to all the participating people and the Secret Santa Give Away begins.  For the next two Fridays Secret Santa stealthily gives a small gift to the person they were given. In a stealthful manner because you’re supposed to be a “Secret Santa.” Anyway, on the third and final Friday all the Secret Santas gather for a Pot-Luck lunch in the conference room, the final gift is exchanged, and the Secret Santas are revealed.

My little gifts that I gave included a golfer’s emergency kit, a bottle of wine, and a coffee mug that I had made. Yes! back to the coffee mug, the poor person’s affordable art. In a post I wrote a couple of weeks ago, “Local Potter Joyce Diveley,” I explained in a comical manner what goes into making a coffee mug.

Click on the photo to see more pictures of a slide show of the tail end of the process, the glazing, loading, and firing of the kiln. Although this kiln firing had a few hundred pieces in it, this is what it takes to wood fire an Anagama style kiln.  We burned two cords of wood, stoking the fire non-stop, took two days to fire and about a week to cool down before we could unload the pots.

Looks like a lot of hard work to make a coffee mug.
